Poker Trivia

The Four Color Deck

Traditionally clubs and spades have been presented in the colour black while diamonds and hearts have been presented in the colour red. The online poker rooms have embraced a new standard, however, where clubs are green and diamonds are blue, while hearts and spades have retained their original red and black colours. In the online poker rooms the cards are just a few pixels on the screen and this makes it easier to distinguish between them.

The thirteen ranks, where 2 is the lowest and A the highest, are listed from low to high below:

2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
10
(abbreviated T)
J
ack (abbreviated J)
Q
ueen (abbreviated Q)
K
ing (abbreviated K)
A
ce (abbreviated A)

The ace is more complex than the other cards because it can rank both high and low, depending on which makes the stronger hand, whereas the other cards always have the same rank. We will elaborate on this in the next chapter where we deal with poker hands.

Ace of Spades Ace of Spades (abbreviated ASpades or As)

These four aces are all equal. None ranks higher than the other.
