Pot Limit
Pot Limit Omaha is a much more common form of poker than Pot Limit Texas Hold'em but you will nevertheless encounter both of them in the online poker rooms.
The Pot Limit betting structure produce even more complex hands than No Limit and Pot Limit is therefore an extremely unsuitable betting structure for beginners. Fact of the matter is that not even the professionals have a good grip on Pot Limit. We will not teach you any strategy pertaining to Pot Limit in this poker school. We just mention it here to give you a basic idea of what it is.
| Pot Limit(PL): With Pot Limit rules the maximum bet is limited by the pot size while maximum raise is limited by the pot size + the cost of calling. The minimum bet is the BB while the minimum amount you can raise with is equal to the bet or amount raised with before you. There is no limit to the number of raises allowed in each betting round. The pot and the chip stacks of the players are the only limits. |
Bear in mind that in online poker rooms you always specify the amount you raise to and this is standard practise in casinos as well. When playing pot limit in casinos and other live poker rooms it can be hard to keep track of the minimum and maximum bet and raise but when playing online the poker software keeps track of the betting range for you.
Pot Limit Texas Hold'em Example
You are playing a game of Pot Limit Hold'em. The SB is $1 and the BB is $2. There are seven players at the table including you. Each player has $200 worth of chips.
►The following actions are taken on the pre-flop:
SB is paid (adds $1 to pot); BB is paid (adds $2 to pot); Player 3 folds; Player 4 folds; Player 5 calls (adds $2 to pot); Player 6 raises to $4 (adds $4 to pot, thereby raising with $2 which is the minimum raise)
You are player 7 and it is your turn to act. You want to make a maximum raise. The pot at this stage is $1+$2+$2+$4=$9 and the cost of calling is $4. This makes the maximum amount you can raise to $26 (maximum amount you can raise with is $9+$4=$13). The minimum amount you can raise to is $6 (minimum amount you can raise with is $2). Your full betting range for raising is $6-$26.
